I’ve sat in rooms full of brilliant people who couldn’t agree on anything.
Every individual was exceptional. Experienced. Talented. And yet the team itself was stuck — frustrated, circling the same conversations, going nowhere.
Here’s what two decades of facilitation work has taught me: smart teams are not necessarily high-performing teams.
Intelligence gets you in the door. It doesn’t get you aligned, connected, or moving in the same direction.
What separates a group of talented people from a truly high-performing team is something less visible — and far more powerful. The quality of their relationships. Their ability to listen. To trust. To surface what’s really going on beneath the surface.
These are not soft skills. They are foundational leadership skills that help a team to truly leverage their collective intelligence between them.
This month, I’m exploring the human skills that actually drive team performance — I call them advanced facilitation skills.
Advanced facilitation moves from managing an agenda to reading the room. From going through agenda items one by one to facilitating dialogue and conversation.
Contemplate this question: what if the biggest bottleneck in your team isn’t capability — but connection?
