I had to face a painful truth in my journey as a woman business owner – I was sabotaging my own success by trying to be everything to everyone. In my previous marriage, I watched my business decline as I unconsciously stepped into my mother’s shoes, prioritizing household perfection over professional growth.

Here’s what hit me hard: As my business results dropped, the strain on our relationship grew. I realized I had fallen into the same trap that countless professional women face – carrying both the mental and physical load of home life while trying to build a thriving business.

This experience transformed how I approach my current partnership. Today, I’m intentional about breaking those ingrained patterns. Want to know my secret? Regular balance checks with my partner. We sit down, list out our household responsibilities, and consciously adjust the scales.

My personal breakthrough came when I trained myself to step back from the automatic “I’ll do it” response. Yes, sometimes this means dinner happens later when it’s his turn to cook. But you know what? Those extra hours of focused business time are invaluable. And there’s something powerfully restorative about being cooked for after a productive day of client work.
On this International Women’s Day, I’m reflecting on my own journey of unlearning. The old model of “man provides, woman nurtures” doesn’t serve anyone in today’s world. I’ve discovered that true partnership means sharing both the earning AND the nurturing responsibilities.

Some days I still catch myself slipping into old patterns. But now I recognize them for what they are – outdated programming that doesn’t align with the business leader I’ve become.
To every woman navigating this balance: Your business deserves your energy too. We don’t have to choose between professional success and personal fulfillment – we just need to consciously create new patterns that serve both.
