In my NEW book, Launch, expected later this year, I share a model called the Empowered Teams Development Model. It describes four stages every team moves through:
Stage 1: Neutral Ground — Everyone is polite, surface-level, cautiously optimistic. Things seem fine, but nothing real is happening.
Stage 2: Chaos and Rebellion — Personality clashes emerge. Passive-aggressive dynamics surface. Silos form. Cliques develop. In culturally diverse teams, this stage is amplified.
Stage 3: Trust and Conformity — Teams that learn to move through conflict reach a place where people speak truthfully, feel safe to disagree, and align behind shared commitments.
Stage 4: Empowerment and High Performance — This is where genuine collaboration lives. Innovation. Ownership. People showing up fully.
Here’s the key insight: most teams are stuck between Stages 1 and 2. They cycle between fake harmony and unresolved conflict — and every “team-building exercise” just resets them back to Neutral Ground.
The missing piece? Relational capability. The ability to move through the discomfort of Stage 2 — not around it — so you can actually reach the trust and performance on the other side.
Think about your own team right now. Which stage are you in? Be honest with yourself.
If you’re cycling between politeness and tension without ever reaching real alignment, there’s a reason for that. And it’s solvable.
On April 16, 2026, I hosted a 90-minute workshop on “From Clashes to Cohesion — Relationship Skills for Leaders.” I’d love to see you there.
