🌍 World Youth Skills Day – The skills AI can’t replace

Today we celebrate our youth, but let’s talk about what they really need to thrive in tomorrow’s world.
While everyone focuses on coding and digital literacy, I’m watching something else: the growing crisis of connection. Young people entering the workforce often struggle with the very skills that separate great leaders from good ones: facilitating difficult conversations, bringing diverse perspectives together, and navigating disagreement toward shared goals.
These aren’t just “soft skills”; they’re human intelligence skills that no AI can replicate.

Why does this shape our industry’s future
In mining and energy, projects succeed when teams can bridge technical expertise with community needs, when engineers can collaborate with environmental scientists, when stakeholders find common ground despite competing interests. Without foundational communication and facilitation skills, we get separation and isolation, exactly what our complex challenges can’t afford.

Invest in the skills that build bridges
Whether you’re mentoring young professionals or designing development programs, prioritise inclusive communication frameworks and group facilitation tools. These are the skills that will help them navigate our interconnected future.
Our youth don’t just need technical skills; they need the wisdom to bring people together.
